IDF Eliminates Senior Hamas Commander in Gaza During Rosh Hashanah
During the Rosh Hashanah holiday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security agency conducted an operation in Gaza that resulted in the elimination of a senior Hamas commander, Mohammed al-Yazouri, who led the organization's Khan Yunis brigade. The operation also targeted a company commander and other operatives, alongside Hamas weapons storage facilities and terror infrastructure. According to the Shin Bet and IDF, al-Yazouri held several key positions within the Hamas brigade, including deputy commander, commander of the combat support battalion, and head of the brigade's intelligence department. In his role, he was responsible for directing the brigade's operatives and planning terror attacks against Israeli forces and civilians. The military stated that al-Yazouri had been involved in sniper training in Gaza aimed at targeting Israeli civilians and soldiers operating near the Gaza border.
Recent intelligence indicated that al-Yazouri was actively working to restore Hamas's capabilities, systematically violating the ceasefire agreement. The IDF stated his elimination was necessary to neutralize an immediate threat. The operation underscores a recent intensification of targeted operations by the IDF and Shin Bet in Gaza, focusing on high-ranking officials in Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad involved in strengthening the organizations' military power and rebuilding terror infrastructure.
A security official noted that Hamas is attempting to accumulate rockets and firepower for potential future conflict with Israel and to advance guerrilla warfare tactics against IDF forces along the Gaza border.
