Iran Seeks Advanced Russian Drones for Conflict with Israel, US

Iran has requested advanced "Geran" strike drones from Russia for use in its conflict with Israel and the United States, according to the Financial Times, citing Western intelligence officials and a source close to the Kremlin. It remains unclear if Moscow has agreed to the transfer.

The request pertains not to the basic "Shahed" drones Iran previously supplied to Russia, but to newer Russian modifications of the "Geran" family. Russia developed these based on Iranian designs but has since enhanced them with higher speeds, extended range, and improved guidance systems. Iran is particularly interested in the jet-powered "Geran-4" and "Geran-5" models.

These upgraded drones are reportedly altering the nature of Russia's air campaign in Ukraine. The "Geran-5," for instance, can reach speeds of up to 600 km/h, has a range of approximately 1000 kilometers, and carries a payload of up to 90 kilograms. It also features thermal imaging cameras, advanced guidance, and electronic warfare countermeasures.

For Iran, acquiring these drones could significantly bolster its capabilities against Israel and the U.S. The higher speed of the jet-powered drones makes them harder to intercept by conventional air defenses, and their relatively low cost allows for mass deployment to overwhelm defenses.

Russia has reportedly adopted tactics of mass deployment of these drones against Ukraine. Western sources have not confirmed whether Russia has made a decision on Iran's request. If transferred, these advanced drones, tested and adapted by Russia in wartime, would enhance Iran's strike potential.
