Windsurfer Daniela Peleg Achieves Fourth at World Championships After Comeback

Israeli windsurfer Daniela Peleg finished fourth at the World Championships in England on Saturday, marking her sixth senior world championship appearance. Peleg, who won a silver medal at the 2022 World Championships at age 18 and two European Championship gold medals in 2024 and 2025, experienced a challenging week that included a significant mental battle to reach the podium.

She began the competition poorly, finishing the first day of qualifications in 32nd place overall and remained in 31st on the second day. However, with only three days of qualifications left, Peleg rallied, closing the gap on the leaders and advancing to the top ten, qualifying for the final race day. She ultimately secured fourth place, narrowly missing the podium.

Reflecting on the competition, Peleg described it as an emotional rollercoaster. "I opened the competition badly, I still find it hard to pinpoint why," she stated. "Despite that, I didn't give up. I'm glad that day by day I managed to improve my position and eventually make it to the medal races. I felt like today I came to devour. I entered the final from the lowest position, I knew I had nothing to lose. I put all my chips on this day."

Peleg detailed her mental recovery process, explaining that after the difficult first day, she disconnected from social media to focus solely on herself and remind herself of her abilities and past achievements. Despite continued struggles on the second day, she persevered, drawing encouragement from her coach, Shahar Tzuberi, who reminded her of her potential and recent good training. She felt confident entering the quarter-finals and semi-finals, performing well in the strong winds and waves.

In the final race, Peleg felt strong but received a penalty for an infraction at the start, forcing her to perform a 360-degree turn with her board. This penalty cost her valuable time, and despite her efforts to catch up and overtake the third-place competitor, she was unable to secure a medal. "It's part of the game and the sport, I learned from this too," she commented.

Looking ahead, Peleg has a short break before resuming training for the next World Championships in January, which will serve as a qualifier for the Los Angeles Olympics, her primary goal.
