Nigerian Footballer Andrew Idoowu Credits Mother's Prayers for Israel Move

Andrew Idoowu, a 20-year-old Nigerian talent for Hapoel Jerusalem, has shared personal insights into his journey to playing football in Israel. In an interview, Idoowu revealed that his mother's prayers played a crucial role in his decision to move to the country.

Idoowu, who scored twice in Hapoel Jerusalem's recent 4-2 victory over Hapoel Kiryat Shmona, described his upbringing in Nigeria as challenging but filled with dreams of playing abroad. He comes from the northern part of Nigeria, known as the 'Brazil of the North' for its footballing talent, with players like Umar Sadiq and Moses Simon also hailing from the region.

He realized his football aspirations when he was scouted by a first-division team while playing in an academy, despite his father's initial disapproval. The opportunity to play in Israel arose unexpectedly. "When I got a call that someone was interested in me from Israel, I didn't know the person who spoke to me," Idoowu stated. He expressed initial confusion and doubt but decided to pursue the opportunity after speaking with his mother.

"I spoke with my mother, she told me to give her two days to pray, and after the two days, she told me that this is what she saw in her prayers and I can go," he recounted. Idoowu also expressed gratitude towards Hapoel Jerusalem's staff, including Ziv Ariyeh and Lior Zada, for welcoming him like a son.

Looking ahead, Idoowu stated that the team is motivated and aims to fight for every point. He identified Eliel Peretz and Dor Peretz as the toughest opponents he has faced in the Israeli league. Regarding his experience in Israel, he expressed respect for everyone and mentioned that while locals often assume he speaks Hebrew, he prefers hummus in a sandwich over trying other local dishes.
