Windsurfer Sharon Kantor Returns to Podium After Injury-Plagued Year

Olympic silver medalist windsurfer Sharon Kantor secured second place at the World Championships in England, finishing just behind teammate Tamar Steinberg. Kantor, who won the world championship in 2024 and a silver medal at the Paris Olympics, described her return to competition form following the achievement.

Her season began with a silver medal at the Lanzarote World Cup, but was soon interrupted by an ankle injury. She also sustained a head injury during training, leading to a significant period away from the water and a lack of consistent professional stability. Her performance at the World Championships demonstrated her return to top-level form.

The upcoming World Championships in Brazil in late January 2027 will serve as a qualifier for the Olympic Games. Kantor aims to maintain her dominant position within the national team as the competition for the single Olympic spot intensifies.

Kantor expressed satisfaction with her performance, noting her steady climb in the rankings and the thrilling final race. Despite acknowledging Steinberg's superior performance in the final, she was pleased with her overall effort and the work put in leading up to the competition, especially after a challenging year marked by multiple injuries. She thanked her coach Shahar Tzuberi, assistant coach Odad Osher, and her sponsors.

Reflecting on the intense competition among national teammates, Kantor stated that competing against fellow Israelis, especially with three out of the top four finishers being Israeli, felt like an extension of team training, albeit on a world championship stage. Her primary focus remains on winning, regardless of her competitors.

Coach Shahar Tzuberi praised the team's preparation and Kantor's remarkable performance after a difficult year, highlighting her resilience and potential for the Los Angeles Olympics. He noted that while there are still skill gaps to close, her current standing is promising. Tzuberi also discussed his role in fostering professionalism and systematic work within the team, emphasizing the strong support from the sailing association for both senior and junior national teams.
