Lionel Messi’s family issued a formal statement on Thursday night, after media reports linked his tears following his first goal in Argentina’s 3-0 win over Algeria at the World Cup to his father Jorge Messi’s health. The family said Jorge is currently dealing with a medical condition and is under medical supervision, recovering and making positive progress given the circumstances.
The statement pushed back hard against the speculation that spread after the match. “The Messi family wishes to inform that Jorge Messi is dealing with a medical condition,” it said, adding that the family was deeply concerned by the lack of “sensitivity, respect and judgment” shown by some in treating a strictly private matter.
The family stressed that only Jorge’s closest relatives have accurate information about his condition. Any version, statement or information that does not come directly from the family and its official channels should not be considered true or reliable, the statement said.
They also asked for responsibility, caution and humanity, saying a person’s health and the peace of their loved ones should not become the subject of irresponsible media coverage. The family thanked the public for the messages of love, respect and concern, asked for Jorge’s privacy and that of the family to be respected, and said any relevant update will be released later through the proper channels.
