Lionel Messi’s family issued a formal statement on Thursday night, after media reports linked his tears following his first goal in Argentina’s 3-0 win over Algeria at the World Cup to his father Jorge Messi’s health. The family said Jorge is currently dealing with a medical condition and is under medical supervision, recovering and making positive progress given the circumstances.

The statement pushed back hard against the speculation that spread after the match. “The Messi family wishes to inform that Jorge Messi is dealing with a medical condition,” it said, adding that the family was deeply concerned by the lack of “sensitivity, respect and judgment” shown by some in treating a strictly private matter.
