Argentine television presenter Florencia Peña resigned on Friday after she falsely reported live that Jorge Messi, the father of Argentina star Lionel Messi, had died. The report was later shown to be completely untrue, after the Messi family issued an official denial the previous night.
In announcing her resignation, Peña said the program’s editor passed her the information through her earpiece during the broadcast, and she reported it immediately. "I must clarify that this incorrect information was given to me during the live broadcast as verified information by the production team, and I trusted it," she said. "Nevertheless, I take responsibility for being part of the mistake, so I have decided to step aside from this program."
She also apologized directly to the Messi family. "I apologize to the Messi family for the terrible moment I imagine they are going through," Peña said. "I am deeply ashamed that I was the instrument that caused this pain. I say again, from the bottom of my heart, I was wrong."
The family’s statement said Jorge Messi has heart problems, is under medical supervision, and is recovering with improving condition. It also sharply criticized parts of the Argentine media for crossing the line in their search for sensational stories. The family said only the closest relatives know the full details of his condition, and warned that any version or claim not coming directly from them should be treated as false and unreliable. They also thanked the public for its support, understanding, and warm responses.
