AI Time Savings Often Reabsorbed into Work, Not Leisure
While artificial intelligence tools can significantly boost productivity by automating tasks, the time saved is frequently reallocated to other work rather than leading to reduced hours or increased leisure, according to recent analyses and studies. A Danish study examining 25,000 workers across 11 professions found no measurable impact on salaries or working hours two years after AI tool adoption. Instead, 85% of users reported that the saved time was dedicated to other tasks, with some workplaces seeing new tasks emerge due to AI implementation.
Research indicates that the benefits of AI are not uniformly distributed. While newer or less experienced employees often see substantial improvements in efficiency and task completion, highly experienced workers sometimes experience a decrease in performance and customer satisfaction when using AI for tasks outside its core capabilities. One experiment showed experienced software developers being slowed down by AI tools, despite their belief that they were saving time.
In Israel, AI adoption is growing, with 39% of businesses now using AI in production, up from 28% a year prior. In 21% of these businesses, AI is already performing tasks previously done by employees. However, most employers (88%) reported no impact on overall staffing levels, with only a small percentage noting reductions in hiring or workforce size.
Experts advise a structured approach to integrating AI, emphasizing the need for clear agreements between employers and employees regarding the measurement of success and the reallocation of saved time. This includes meticulously tracking not just task completion time but also post-production work like revisions and quality checks. Employees are encouraged to propose specific uses for freed-up time, such as taking on more complex tasks or training colleagues, and to negotiate tangible rewards like training or new responsibilities, rather than simply accepting more work as the default outcome.
