Global Alliance for Palestine Condemns UK Travel Ban on Activists
The Global Alliance for Palestine has denounced a travel ban imposed on British figures, including former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, as an attempt to silence critics of Israeli policies. The alliance stated that the ban, which prevents Corbyn and other targeted individuals from entering Israel and Palestinian territories, was a response to the British government's intention to impose trade restrictions and ban imports from West Bank settlements.
The alliance asserted that Israel's move aims to suppress dissent and hinder political and human rights activism. They emphasized that the ban will not silence Corbyn or other targeted individuals from advocating for Palestinian rights and self-determination, characterizing the measures as "arbitrary policies" designed to intimidate free voices.
According to the alliance, the targeting of Corbyn and others is not only an effort to silence elected representatives and civil society voices but also to shield Israeli policies from international scrutiny and accountability. Corbyn has reportedly been pushing the UK government for further actions, including ending military cooperation, imposing a comprehensive arms embargo, and ensuring accountability through international courts.
The alliance, which includes figures like Mustafa Barghouti, Yanis Varoufakis, and Angelo Bonelli, comprises global movements, unions, and NGOs. They aim to mobilize public opinion and demand political and legal accountability. The travel ban is seen as potentially escalating tensions between Israel and Britain and reflects growing international pressure on Israeli policies in the West Bank.
