EU Foreign Policy Chief's Israel-Russia Comparison Sparks Outrage

The European Union's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, has drawn sharp criticism from Israel's Foreign Minister, Gideon Saar, for comparing Israel's approach to Judea and Samaria with Russia's annexation of Crimea. Kallas made the remarks in an interview, where she also supported halting trade with Israeli settlements, a stance she described as "principled," following declarations from 12 EU countries about their readiness to impose sanctions on these settlements.

Saar vehemently rejected the comparison, calling it "factually and legally unfounded and completely unacceptable." He emphasized the Jewish people's documented historical connection and rights to Judea, Samaria, and the Land of Israel, asserting these are more extensively confirmed than those of any other people in history. Saar questioned Kallas's reasoning, pointing out that Judea and Samaria have never belonged to a Palestinian state, which has never existed. He also questioned the EU's objective in comparing "the only democracy in the Middle East, which contributes to Europe's defense and security in so many ways, with Russia."

This incident occurs amidst discussions within the EU about restructuring its diplomatic service, potentially reducing the powers of the European External Action Service and transferring some functions to the European Commission. This initiative is reportedly being pushed by France and Germany, fueled by internal disagreements within the EU regarding its policy toward Israel and criticism directed at Kallas.
