Israel Risks Repeating Past Strategic Errors in Gaza, Analyst Warns
An Israeli analyst warns that Israel could be on the verge of a significant strategic mistake in the Gaza Strip, potentially repeating past failures by attempting to rely on local armed factions to manage the territory.
Ran Adalist, a commentator for Maariv, argues that Israel's approach of seeking a local force to counter adversaries, supported externally, has historically proven problematic. He cites examples in Egypt, the West Bank (Judea and Samaria), Lebanon, and Syria, suggesting a similar pattern is emerging in Gaza as Israel seeks a post-Hamas governance model.
Adalist's analysis, presented as an opinion piece, suggests that arming weaker or competing groups in Gaza, while seemingly offering an advantage by reducing the need for Israeli military presence, could instead foster prolonged internal conflict. This could lead to Gaza being fragmented among multiple armed entities rather than establishing a stable alternative authority.
He draws parallels to Israel's past experiences, including its involvement with Christian Phalange forces in Lebanon during the 1982 war, which ultimately led to a prolonged Israeli presence and the rise of Hezbollah. Another example cited is the creation of "village leagues" in the West Bank in the late 1970s, which failed to gain legitimacy and were perceived as collaborators. Adalist also points to Israel's support for Druze communities in Syria, noting the tactical benefits can become strategic burdens.
The analyst emphasizes that while direct comparisons have limitations, the core challenge remains: establishing a functional governance structure in Gaza post-Hamas. He stresses that military defeat of Hamas alone is insufficient, and the absence of a legitimate police force, civil administration, and political structure could create a vacuum filled by armed clans, criminal groups, or Hamas remnants. Therefore, selecting local partners is as crucial for Israel's security as military operations.
