Mughar al-Kubra Residents Reject Settlement Outpost

Residents of Mughar al-Kubra, a Palestinian town in Israel's Galilee region, have voiced strong opposition to the establishment of a new settlement outpost in the Al-Rous area. The local council and popular committee stated that a significant portion of the land in question is privately owned by town residents, with other parts belonging to the Israel Land Authority or the Jewish National Fund (Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael). They expressed concern that the ongoing development at the site, including the installation of water lines and tents, could lead to a permanent presence and infringe upon local property rights.

The presence of individuals reportedly from West Bank settlements, and the possibility of their affiliation with the "Hilltop Youth" extremist group, has heightened anxieties about potential harassment of local landowners. These fears are amplified as the olive harvest season approaches, a critical time when landowners need regular access to their fields. The local leadership warned that any unrest in the area would directly impede residents' ability to tend to their crops and conduct agricultural work.

Questions have been raised regarding the legal and administrative basis for the outpost's establishment, particularly given reports of approval from the Misgav Regional Council and the local planning and building committee. The Mughar al-Kubra council questioned how a settlement gathering could be permitted within their jurisdiction and on land owned by local Arabs.

This development is seen by residents as part of a broader strategy to strengthen Jewish settlement in the Galilee. They referenced a recent ten-year plan to boost Jewish settlement in the region, discussed at a conference attended by Israeli Security Minister Israel Katz in Karmiel. The local leadership has unequivocally rejected the outpost and vowed to pursue legal and administrative actions to prevent its consolidation.
