Top Rabbi Weeps, Warns of Dire Spiritual Danger

Behadrei HaredimReligious
Translated & summarized from Behadrei Haredim by baba
The story · English

Rabbi Moshe Sternbuch, a prominent rabbinic authority, was reportedly heard weeping and lamenting the state of affairs late at night in his Jerusalem home. The incident occurred after midnight, following the recitation of penitential prayers known as 'selichot'. Close associates described his distress and unusual style of speech as uncharacteristic.

According to the report, Rabbi Sternbuch cried out, "Let us return to God, for the times are difficult and the sorrows of our hearts have widened, and we do not know what will be." He then addressed God as a father, pleading, "Father, Father, Father! Return to us! How much longer must we suffer? You told us we are your children, and a father does not abandon his children. Please, do not leave us! We have sinned before you with audacity and brazenness... but you are a father... May the Holy One, Blessed be He, help and forgive us, for it is a father's way to forgive his son, and you will forgive us because we are your children, as you promised us: 'You are children to the Lord your God.'"

Rabbi Sternbuch also expressed deep pain over "harsh decrees" and "spiritual dangers" facing the generation, warning of the future. He stated, "The situation is bitter, bitter, bitter!" and added, "They are killing us and fighting us. They want to uproot us completely from God, and they want us to be a nation like all nations... And what is the end? They are killing us and fighting us... May God help and have mercy! This is a time of troubles, and may God help us get through it."

The report claims these words, delivered with intense emotion and tears, instilled awe and trepidation in those present, who were struck by the rabbi's profound love for the Jewish people and his fear of divine judgment as the High Holy Days approached.
