Israel Considers Simulator Training for New Drivers

Calcalist
Translated & summarized from Calcalist by baba
The story · English

Israel's National Road Safety Authority (Nirgav) is exploring the implementation of driving simulators for young and new drivers, a tool widely used internationally but not yet standard in Israel. Documents reveal the Nirgav intends to contract with Professor Avinoam Borovsky of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev for the development of knowledge components related to hazard perception for new drivers, primarily those under 24. The initial contract is valued at approximately 975,000 shekels over two years.

The goal of this initiative is to create a digital, simulated testing and training tool for new private vehicle drivers. This simulator would replicate driving conditions before drivers gain real-world experience. Several countries already integrate simulators into their driver education programs; Singapore mandates simulator use before road tests, Finland's driving schools incorporate them, and the UK requires simulator sessions as part of minimum driving lessons before practical exams.

In contrast, simulator use in Israel is currently rare, mainly found in advanced driving schools. The Nirgav plans to issue a tender for the technological development of such a training and testing system. While the initial contract focuses on developing the knowledge base, the ultimate aim is to establish simulators for new drivers, potentially for those who have already obtained their licenses. The training scenarios will be tailored to address the specific accident data of young drivers in Israel.

The Nirgav previously solicited proposals from Israeli universities in 2022 for this project. Professor Borovsky was the sole applicant, leading to the current agreement.
