Revived Stream Becomes Popular Israeli Swimming Spot
A stream in Israel's Galilee region, Nahal Tsalmon, which had been dry for years, has been revitalized and is now a popular destination for swimmers and photographers. Mekorot, Israel's national water company, is pumping purified water into the stream as part of the 'Reverse Conduit' project, which supplies water to the Sea of Galilee. Travel blogger Chen Yosef documented her experience visiting the newly accessible pools, noting the initial challenges in finding the correct entrance due to private land restrictions and lack of clear signage.
Yosef's first visit during the busy " Bein HaZmanim" holiday period was met with crowds, making the experience less enjoyable. She eventually found a viable access point through the moshav (cooperative agricultural community) of Livnim. Despite the crowds, she found the first pool to be pleasant and less crowded than expected, but the second pool, near a historic travertine bridge, was overwhelmingly packed.
Upon a subsequent mid-week visit, Yosef experienced the stream in its full splendor, with fewer people allowing her to appreciate the clear turquoise water, lush vegetation, and the unique bridge, which is a remnant of an ancient aqueduct. She describes the bridge area as resembling a cave with the stream flowing through it, offering a picturesque scene ideal for photography.
Yosef advises that the current best access is via Livnim, though she stresses that the paths are not yet officially developed and signage is absent. She notes the water is very deep, making the pools suitable for couples, solo travelers, or small groups, but not recommended for families with young children. She also mentioned a slight salinity and odor to the water, suggesting it doesn't feel entirely like a natural spring, though the surrounding environment does. Yosef hopes for more organized development to improve accessibility for both residents and visitors, emphasizing the importance of preserving and developing natural water sources in Israel.
