US Lawmakers Urge State Department to Press Israel on Gaza Hospital Director's Detention
Sixty-nine Democratic and independent members of the U.S. Congress have sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, urging him to pressure Israel to release Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza. Dr. Abu Safiya has been held in Israeli detention for over 500 days without indictment.
He was apprehended in December 2024. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claim he is suspected of involvement in terrorist activities. Both Dr. Abu Safiya and his family vehemently deny these allegations.
The lawmakers emphasized in their letter that "no government is absolved of the obligation to provide basic medical care and due process to detainees." They are calling for his release, highlighting the extended period of detention without formal charges.
