Gaza Doctor Held by Israel Alleges Abuse, Sleep Deprivation
Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, has provided a new testimony to his lawyer detailing ongoing abuse by Israeli prison guards. He alleges he is being beaten, including on sensitive parts of his body, and deliberately deprived of sleep. Abu Safiya stated that the assaults intensified after a previous visit from his lawyer, and he was threatened against sharing details of his detention conditions.
Simultaneously, the Israeli Prison Service is reportedly delaying access for an independent physician from the Physicians for Human Rights organization to examine him. This comes despite Abu Safiya recently being transferred to the Prison Service's medical center and undergoing medical examinations there.
Further details are expected to be released.
