Israeli Report Links Gaza Hospital Director to Hamas Leadership Amid Detention

Dr. Hossam Abu-Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, has been revealed to hold a senior rank equivalent to a brigadier general within Hamas, according to an intelligence report from the Israeli Prison Service published on Tuesday. The report includes 2020 intelligence footage showing Abu-Safiya accompanying a Hamas delegation during an official visit to the hospital.

Abu-Safiya was arrested by Israeli Defense Forces during a raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital on December 27, 2024, following a siege imposed on the medical facility. In a recent court hearing conducted via video call, the doctor appeared significantly emaciated. The Palestinian delegation to the United Nations has urgently called on the international community to secure his release amid reports of severe deterioration in his health.

The Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that Ibrahim Khreishi, the permanent observer of the Palestinian mission to the UN in Geneva, sent an urgent appeal to humanitarian organizations demanding Abu-Safiya's immediate release. Khreishi stated that Abu-Safiya has been held in isolation without charge or trial since December 27, 2024, and has been denied adequate medical care, placing his life at serious risk.
