Ex-IDF Finance Advisor Slams Sanctions on Haredi Students

Former IDF Finance Advisor and General Staff Forum member, Brigadier General (Res.) Ram Aminach, has publicly criticized the unprecedented economic sanctions being imposed on young Haredi yeshiva students. Aminach, who previously served as the financial advisor to the Chief of Staff, called the sanctions "unfair" and "madness," urging an immediate halt to what he described as a "persecution."

The sanctions come amid a backdrop of increasing arrests of draft dodgers and significant financial pressures on the Haredi community, including impacts on daycare, housing, and municipal taxes (Arnona). Aminach's intervention from within the defense establishment is seen as a surprising and significant voice opposing the current measures.

His remarks were made in the context of ongoing debates and actions concerning the military conscription of Haredi men, a deeply contentious issue in Israeli society. The government has been facing pressure to integrate the Haredi population into national service, including the military, while many within the Haredi community seek exemptions based on religious study.
