Israeli Goalkeeper Nikita Haikin Faces Challenging Year Ahead of Champions League Debut

Nikita Haikin, the sole Israeli player in the Champions League, is set to face Bayern Munich with Bodø/Glimt. This comes after a tumultuous year for the 31-year-old goalkeeper, marked by the dashed dream of playing in the World Cup, a significant league defeat, and damaging media investigations into him and his family.

Haikin, born in Netanya to Russian immigrant parents, previously played in Israel for clubs like Bnei Yehuda and Hapoel Kfar Saba before joining Bodø/Glimt in 2019. He became the team's top goalkeeper and was instrumental in their Champions League playoff victory over Inter Milan last season.

His hopes of representing Norway in the World Cup were complicated by his pursuit of Norwegian citizenship, which he obtained in April after seven years in the country. He expressed pride in becoming Norwegian, calling it his home. However, the day after receiving citizenship, he suffered a major error in a league match against Viking, which Bodø/Glimt lost 5-0. Haikin admitted he was distracted and not prepared for the game.

Further distress came on April 19, when Norwegian newspaper VG published investigations alleging Haikin had not properly reported income and benefited from tax havens, and that his father was suspected of fraud and money laundering in Russia. Haikin called the reports painful, accusing the media of taking things out of context and exaggerating, and vowed to protect his reputation.

Adding to his challenges, FIFA denied Haikin's eligibility to play for Norway until March 2028, crushing his World Cup aspirations. Despite these setbacks, Haikin is determined to prove himself on the Champions League stage against Bayern Munich, seeing it as an opportunity to overcome his difficult year.
