Israel Monitors Houthi Threat to Red Sea Shipping Lanes

Israel is closely monitoring the Houthi movement's growing presence in Al Mukha, Yemen, and its potential to disrupt shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb strait, a critical gateway to the Red Sea. The IDF recently conducted a large-scale military exercise in Eilat simulating various attack scenarios, including seaborne, airborne, and ground assaults by Houthi and Iran-aligned militia forces. The drill also practiced responses to hostage situations in hotels and educational facilities within the city.

During the exercise, IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi emphasized the military's reach, stating, "In Bab el-Mandeb, in the heart of Beirut, in the ports of Lebanon, and off the coast of Gaza, we have proven that the IDF's long arm is powerful, determined, and reaches everywhere to strike those who wish us ill."

Navy Commander Vice Admiral Eyal Harel added, "In the new maritime arena, there is no longer a distant front. To anyone who seeks to challenge the State of Israel from the distant maritime space, I say from here: distance will not grant immunity to those who seek to harm us." He stressed the Navy's role in projecting Israeli power and ensuring freedom of operation and strategic interests in national maritime domains, vowing to counter any threats openly and covertly.

The exercise, involving the 80th and 96th divisions, tested the combined capabilities of the Navy, Air Force, and ground forces in responding to sudden and widespread security incidents.
