Map tracks every Houthi attack on Red Sea shipping
Over the past two months, Yemen’s Houthis, backed by Iran, have disrupted shipping in the Red Sea by attacking vessels they say are Israeli-owned or bound for Israel. The first ship targeted was the Galaxy Leader, a car carrier owned by a British company belonging to Israeli shipping magnate Rami Ungar. Houthi forces seized the vessel and took it to Yemen.
Since then, the Houthis have tried additional takeovers, but U.S. destroyers operating in the area helped stop them. They have also carried out repeated attacks on ships with no known Israeli connection, using anti-ship coastal missiles, cruise missiles, drones and anti-ship ballistic missiles.
The attacks have spread across the southern Red Sea, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and even the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea. In response, the world’s largest shipping companies announced they were suspending transits through the Red Sea.
The United States also announced the creation of a multinational force to operate in the waterway, which is a critical route for global trade. The map published with the article lists every documented incident so far and allows readers to click each ship for details.
