Algeria announced on Thursday a complete severance of diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, stating that it had exhausted all means to preserve bilateral ties. The decision follows years of tension, which escalated after the UAE signed the Abraham Accords in 2020, normalizing relations with Israel.
Algeria had previously condemned the UAE's normalization with Israel, alleging it was an attempt to isolate Algeria within the Muslim world. Further anger in Algiers was sparked by the UAE's decision to open an embassy in the Western Sahara region. This territory is currently under Moroccan control but is the subject of an ongoing conflict with the Sahrawi people, who seek an independent state there.
Algeria supports the Polisario Front, the Sahrawi national liberation movement, and advocates for a diplomatic solution to the dispute.
