Northern Farmers Resist Extortion Amid Rising 'Protection Racket' Violence

Farmers in northern Israel are facing a growing wave of "protection racket" extortion, with daily threats and escalating violence including arson of agricultural equipment. This surge in criminal activity has led to a sense of abandonment among residents of the region's farms and ranches.

Criminals are making threatening calls demanding payment for alleged security services, and have resorted to physically damaging property. Tractors and farm equipment have been set ablaze, becoming a common tactic to instill fear and force compliance. However, some farmers are refusing to yield and are organizing a civil resistance movement.

One such farmer, Yitzik Abramovitch from Ramat Tzvi, recounted receiving a threatening call demanding protection money. He refused to pay and, along with other local farmers and residents, decided to stand firm against the threats and arson. "If we don't have the courage, we won't be here," Abramovitch stated, emphasizing their resolve to confront the criminals. "They look for easy targets, and we will be a tough nut to crack."

The farmers' independent organization and determination in the face of these extortionists highlight a stark contrast with state institutions and law enforcement. Victor Ben Ami, a former senior Shin Bet official, analyzed the police's challenges in combating this escalating "agricultural terrorism" in the north. He explained the significant difficulties the Israel Police faces due to the widespread nature of the protection racket, noting that the inability to provide comprehensive and continuous protection forces citizens to take security into their own hands.

"Those who cannot protect their citizens, the citizens will protect themselves, and I salute them," Ben Ami added, commending the farmers' self-defense efforts.
