Jerusalem Synagogue Hosts Solemn Selichot Service Honoring Rabbi Ben Zion Uziel

Hundreds gathered on Wednesday evening at the historic "Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai" synagogue in Jerusalem's Old City Jewish Quarter for an inspiring Selichot service. The event was held to honor the legacy of Rabbi Ben Zion Meir Hai Uziel, the former Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel, by presenting a "Mofet" (Exemplary) Award in his memory.

The gathering, organized by Avi Shalom, director of the synagogue under the Council of Four Sephardic Synagogues, attracted prominent rabbis, public figures, and a large congregation. The evening commenced with a festive reception and the Maariv evening prayer, followed by lectures detailing Rabbi Uziel's life, thought, and legal rulings. Speakers included current Sephardic Chief Rabbi David Yosef, Rabbi Shimon Hai Alouf, Professor Yaron Harel, and attorney Rabbi Shlomo Levi. Moving personal recollections were shared by Rabbi Uziel's grandson, journalist Meir Uziel.

The "Jerusalem Boys" choir, accompanied by musicians, performed piyutim (liturgical poems) and Selichot melodies in the Sephardic tradition, featuring leading cantors and liturgical poets. The highlight of the evening occurred at midnight when the entire congregation recited Selichot prayers in a deeply spiritual atmosphere, led by Rabbi Shimon Alouf, in anticipation of the upcoming Jewish New Year.

The event aimed to connect attendees with the spirit of the times and reinforce their spiritual connection, particularly in the lead-up to the High Holidays.
