Shas Party Vows to Enact Real Conscription Law, Draft Non-Learners

Yinon Azulai, chairman of the Shas party's faction in the Knesset, declared that the party intends to enact a "real conscription law" that will include drafting individuals who do not engage in Torah study. Azulai stated on 103FM radio that while the status of Torah scholars will be regulated, "he who does not study will go to the army." He addressed protests by the Jerusalem Faction, a hardline Haredi group, against Shas, noting that his own son was assaulted by protesters. Azulai believes these demonstrations indicate Shas is advancing a conscription bill that will draft non-students, asserting, "If the Faction comes and demonstrates against us, then everyone understands that we are coming to make a real conscription law where the status of Torah scholars will be regulated, and he who does not study will go to the army."

Azulai also emphasized that the IDF must establish tracks to accommodate Haredi recruits, ensuring they can maintain their religious lifestyle during their service, so they "enter Haredi and exit Haredi." Responding to questions about Shas campaign videos depicting families with one son in the army and another studying Torah, Azulai confirmed his stance, stating, "I also said this, I do not apologize for it. We are simply reflecting reality; in our families, everyone is like this, even in my family."

When challenged about criticism regarding the lack of English and mathematics studies in some Haredi institutions, Azulai countered by pointing to institutions like Midreshet Bnei Yosef, which he claims offer these subjects. He concluded by stating that one cannot focus solely on one aspect, referencing the many children of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef.
