Beersheba Opens New Cultural Plaza for Senior Citizens
The Beersheba Municipality has inaugurated "Cultural Plaza," a renovated public space located at the city library plaza, designed to serve as an open, vibrant hub for the city's senior citizens. The initiative was advanced as part of the "Muni100 - Optimal Aging" program, a collaborative effort led by the Beersheba Municipality, JDC-Eshel, the "Kivunim" company, and various government ministries including the Ministry of Welfare and Social Security, the Ministry for Social Equality, the Ministry of Construction and Housing, and the Ministry of Health, along with National Insurance grants.
The plaza, situated in the heart of older neighborhoods and on a central urban axis, has been redesigned to be an inviting space specifically tailored to the needs of the elderly. The renovation aims to encourage seniors to leave their homes, combat loneliness, and strengthen community ties within the city. The space now features accessible seating areas, comfortable benches, and environmental elements, complemented by a regular schedule of cultural, sports, and leisure activities held every Tuesday.
The festive launch event was attended by Beersheba Mayor Rubik Danilovich, deputy mayors, JDC-Eshel CEO Yossi Hyman, Muni100 Leadership Forum representative Ruth Hazizahu, and the program's manager in the Beersheba Municipality, Orly Kabalo. The evening commenced with a community sports activity, followed by a reception and speeches, culminating in a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a toast for the upcoming Rosh Hashanah holiday. The celebration concluded with a performance by the accordion orchestra from the Municipal Conservatory.
Mayor Danilovich praised the opening, stating that seniors are the "beating heart" of the city's community. He emphasized that the plaza was created to provide them with an open, warm, and empowering space that fosters an active lifestyle, human connection, and intergenerational communication. He also highlighted the deep partnership between the municipality, JDC-Eshel, and government ministries, which prioritizes residents and establishes a new community tradition.
Orly Kabalo, the Muni100 program manager, added that the plaza serves as a community anchor, inviting seniors to engage in quality cultural activities and socialize. She noted that the combination of accessible infrastructure and regular programming creates a genuine opportunity to enhance feelings of belonging and social connections in the city.
