Israel Boosts West Bank Forces Amid Olive Harvest Security Fears

The Israeli military is preparing to reinforce its troops in the occupied West Bank ahead of the olive harvest season, which begins in about a month. Israeli security agencies are concerned about potential attacks by settlers against Palestinians and attempts to block their access to agricultural lands. These fears are compounded by worries of a broader deterioration of the situation during the upcoming Jewish holidays.

According to Israel's Public Broadcasting Corporation (Kan 11), the Israeli army conducted a situation assessment on Tuesday. As part of the preparations, additional troop formations will be deployed, and instructions have been issued to allow Palestinians to harvest olives on their land, even in areas where settlers might attempt to obstruct them by force. A military official stated that security forces are preparing with enhanced plans and troops to ensure Palestinians can harvest everywhere, even if settlers try to interfere violently. The army plans to increase its presence in the West Bank by two additional battalions in the coming weeks, positioning forces to prevent a decline in field conditions during the Jewish holidays and olive harvest period.

The Kan 11 report highlighted that this decision stems from concerns within the military establishment about an increase in settler attacks, particularly in Palestinian areas where such assaults are frequent during the olive harvest. There is also apprehension about wider confrontations erupting in the West Bank. These Israeli preparations occur amidst growing international criticism of Israel's policy regarding settler violence, while attacks targeting Palestinian farmers, their property, and land in various West Bank areas continue.

Recent Israeli reports indicated increasing concern within security agencies about the expansion of settler outposts in the West Bank, including those in Areas A and B, coinciding with heightened warnings of potential Palestinian attacks. Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper cited security sources stating the army is making significant efforts to increase readiness for potential incidents in the West Bank, with at least two more battalions to be added starting from the Jewish New Year. The Israeli Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir, will allocate additional forces based on developments. In a related move, a senior officer has completed operational readiness for a brigade that could be tasked with commanding the area south of Jerusalem, a measure reportedly not implemented in years.

These preparations coincide with ongoing settlement expansion and escalating settler attacks in the occupied West Bank. Palestinian farmers frequently face restrictions accessing their land during the olive harvest, along with attacks involving beatings, damage to trees and crops, and land confiscation.
