38 Parties Registered for Knesset Elections Amidst Unusual Names

Thirty-eight political entities have been cleared to participate in the upcoming Knesset elections, scheduled for October 27. The Central Elections Committee has concluded its process of accepting and registering party lists for the parliamentary vote. As is customary, the registration period saw a surge of parties and political groups, many of which are not widely known to the public, according to the Times of Israel. The relatively simple requirements for party registration often lead to the emergence of groups with unconventional names and limited public recognition.

However, analysts believe only a few major political forces have realistic chances of entering the parliament. These include Likud, Yashar with Gadi Eisenkot, Hatnuah, Otzma Yehudit, Religious Zionism-Zeut, Yahadut HaTorah, Yisrael Beiteinu, Shas, Ra'am, the Joint List, Amcha Yisrael led by Ofer Winter, and Democrats. Parties like Blue and White, a project by Sharren Haskel, and a new Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) union are not expected to pass the electoral threshold.

Beyond the established political players, dozens of lesser-known movements with peculiar names have also registered. Examples include "Welcome to Israel!", "A Necklace Symbolizing Love and Unity of the People", "Pirates", "Paradise Led by Jesus, Son of David", "You and I, The People's Party of Israel", "Covenant of the Redemption of Israel", and "Personal Security". This proliferation of minor parties may stem from a desire to draw attention to specific initiatives or to stand out through distinctive actions, such as the "Pirates" party members arriving in costume for their registration.

Experts suggest that votes cast for parties failing to cross the electoral threshold are not necessarily protest votes. Instead, these votes are redistributed proportionally among the parties that successfully pass the threshold, with larger vote-getters receiving a greater share of the redistributed votes. A recent poll indicated that Ofer Winter's "Amcha Yisrael" could secure four seats, potentially making it a significant player in the formation of the next Knesset coalition.
