Yatir Winery Founder Recounts Early Struggles and Success

Yaakov Ben-Dor, CEO and co-founder of Yatir Winery, shared the challenging beginnings of the now internationally renowned winery as part of a project documenting the establishment of Israeli settlements. The "Documenting the Elders and Founders of the Settlements" initiative, run by the Ministry of Heritage and the Council for the Preservation of Heritage Sites in Israel, aims to record the stories of early settlers across various regions of Israel, including the Jordan Valley, Judea, Samaria, Benjamin, the Golan Heights, and the Galilee.

Ben-Dor recalled their initial attempt to create an organic vineyard, which ultimately proved unmarketable. Facing a year's worth of unmarketable fruit, they pivoted to producing grape juice, a decision that marked a significant turning point. "What do you do after you finish a year and you can't sell the fruit? For me, it was a forced leap into the water, and we made grape juice. Things started to roll," he explained.

He emphasized the winery's development of a unique identity, rooted in its location and expressed through its symbols and language, rather than imitating foreign styles. "If you ask me, from my perspective, if I know how to replicate this success of Yatir Winery and reach the brand's strength as it is in Israel and around the world, I don't think it can be done again. There was a lot of luck here, blessing, and a touch from above," Ben-Dor concluded.

The interview is part of a larger project that includes hundreds of interviews intended to preserve the narratives of Israel's pioneers for future generations.
