Yom Kippur Fast: Easy Recipes for Pre and Post-Fasting Meals
As Yom Kippur approaches, attention turns to food, focusing on meals that ease the pre-fast hunger and post-fast re-entry into eating. The article offers three recipes designed to be light and easily digestible, avoiding the common pitfalls of overeating before or after the long fast. These recipes are provided courtesy of the nutrition department at appliance company Teka.
Before the fast, a Japanese-style seasoned rice is recommended. The preparation involves thoroughly washing round rice, cooking it with water until tender, and then incorporating a seasoned mixture of rice vinegar or mirin, sugar, and salt. The rice is gently mixed with the seasoning and allowed to cool slightly before serving, aiming for a satisfying yet not heavy pre-fast meal.
For breaking the fast, a warm Chai Latte is suggested. This beverage is made by simmering water with a cinnamon stick, star anise, date syrup, ground ginger, turmeric, a black tea bag, and a pinch of nutmeg for about 15 minutes. Milk is then added and heated gently before straining and serving. For those sensitive to caffeine, a decaffeinated tea option is available.
To accompany the post-fast drink, a simple orange cake is presented. The recipe calls for mixing dry ingredients like flour, brown sugar, semolina, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and orange zest, with wet ingredients consisting of orange yogurt, olive oil, and orange juice. After combining and letting the batter rest, it is baked in a round pan at 180 degrees Celsius for approximately 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. The cake should be cooled completely before serving.
