US Congressman Warns UK Sanctions on Israel Will Trigger Retaliatory US State Laws

U.S. Congressman Randy Fine has issued a stern warning that British sanctions against Israel will automatically activate existing anti-BDS laws in numerous American states, potentially causing significant economic damage to British companies. Fine stated in an interview that these state-level measures, which prohibit businesses boycotting Israel from operating within their borders, have not been fully comprehended by many British firms.

These retaliatory actions, triggered by the UK's announcement that 11 additional countries are joining its sanctions against Israel, could prevent British companies from obtaining licenses and government contracts. Fine referenced a 2018 bill he authored in Florida, which bars any company involved in boycotting Israel from receiving state contracts, work permits, or tax exemptions.

Fine noted that the British sanctions have a six-to-nine-month delay before implementation, offering a narrow window for companies to comply. He emphasized that Florida is not alone, as 38 U.S. states have adopted similar anti-boycott legislation since 2018. The combined economic power of states like Florida and Texas alone surpasses the UK's economy, and coordinated enforcement could severely impact British businesses operating in the U.S.

Regarding federal action in Washington, Fine expressed skepticism about Congress's ability to act due to waning Democratic support for such measures. He believes any federal response would likely come from the White House, adding that President Trump has already signaled considerable displeasure with the British decision. Fine, a member of the 'America Free Sharia Caucus,' frames these sanctions as part of a broader ideological struggle where Israel represents the Western civilization.
