Qatar's Divergent Reactions to Israeli and Iranian Attacks Highlight Shifting Stance

Qatar's response to a targeted Israeli operation in Doha a year ago differed significantly from its reaction to an Iranian attack on its territory six months later, according to a report. In September 2025, Israel conducted a focused operation in Doha targeting a Hamas leadership office, with a specific aim to neutralize Hamas official Khalil al-Haya. Although the assassination attempt failed, Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the action, labeling it a "cowardly attack" and a "criminal act" that violated international laws and threatened the safety of residents.

In contrast, when Iran launched an attack on Qatari territory in February 2026 as part of its "Roaring Lion" operation, Qatar's Ministry of Interior issued a more subdued statement. The ministry reported a successful interception of the attacks, stating there were no casualties or material damage. Notably, the statement did not condemn the attack or explicitly identify Iran as the aggressor, referring to it only as a threat to the country's territory.

Further highlighting the difference, Qatar announced after the Israeli operation that it was suspending its mediation efforts between Israel and Hamas. However, following the Iranian attack, Qatar called for increased mediation efforts between Iran and the United States to de-escalate the situation.
