Israel Restores Water Supply After Algae Bloom Disrupts Desalination Plants
Israel's water supply system is gradually returning to normal after a significant environmental incident caused by a massive bloom of microscopic algae along its Mediterranean coast. Approximately ten days ago, the algae accumulation forced the shutdown of five major desalination plants, which are crucial for the country's water security, providing about 80% of its drinking water needs.
The Hadera desalination plant was the only one that continued to operate, albeit partially. The other four facilities have since resumed at least partial operations. Experts believe the algae originated from the Nile Delta region and clogged the seawater intake systems, necessitating the shutdowns.
Despite the disruption to the desalination infrastructure, the Israeli public did not experience water shortages. The Ministry of Energy and the Water Authority confirmed that both drinking and agricultural water needs were met through alternative sources, including groundwater and reservoirs like the Sea of Galilee.
However, authorities are urging continued water conservation, particularly for irrigation, as the system remains reliant on these supplementary sources.
