Police Commissioner Vows Merit-Based Promotions Amidst Political Tensions

Police Commissioner Danny Levi has stated that promotions within the Israel Police will continue to be based on professionalism, skills, and suitability for the organization's needs. This declaration was made during the police's Rosh Hashanah (New Year) ceremony, held at the National Police Academy in Beit Shemesh.

Levi's remarks come amid a significant dispute with National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir over new appointments within the police force. Ben-Gvir has reportedly informed Levi that he will not approve new appointments during the election period, citing concerns that Levi is attempting to promote individuals aligned with the Attorney General. Reports suggest that Levi's office maintains the appointment process will proceed, even though senior police appointments legally require the minister's approval.

The conflict escalated after Levi met with Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, prompting Ben-Gvir to send a sharp letter accusing Levi of attempting to make appointments without proper authority and vowing not to let the police become a "puppet on a string."

The Rosh Hashanah ceremony also served to honor the families of police officers, acknowledging their partnership in the force's mission. Thirty outstanding officers from the Israel Police, who recently received the President's Award of Excellence, were also recognized. Commissioner Levi commended the officers for their efforts over the past year, noting a decrease in crime rates, murders, property offenses, and traffic accidents. He also assured that the police would operate within the law during the election period to ensure public safety and order, allowing citizens to vote securely and freely.
