Iran Strikes Jordan Base After US Destroys Oil Tankers; Rubio Issues Warning

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced it attacked a U.S. base in Jordan overnight, claiming it was retaliation for the U.S. destroying five Iranian oil tankers. The U.S. had stated the tankers were destroyed in response to Iran firing ballistic missiles at a U.S. Navy warship. During the Iranian strike, interceptions were also observed over Israel.

Jordanian military officials reported that 20 missiles were launched from Iran toward the kingdom. Eighteen of these were intercepted, and two additional missiles landed in unpopulated areas. No casualties were reported in Jordan.

Iranian state media reported explosions in the Strait of Hormuz, near Kharg Island. The IRGC also claimed to have attacked two American vessels and eight oil tankers in the Persian Gulf as part of its response to the U.S. action.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented on the escalating tensions in the Gulf, warning Tehran, "Every time Iran tries to hit U.S. Navy ships, it will lose oil tankers." He suggested this pattern would continue. The U.S. Central Command had previously confirmed the destruction of the five Iranian crude oil carriers on September 8th, following two separate ballistic missile attacks by the IRGC on a U.S. Navy warship.
