IDF Raids East Jerusalem Terror Hubs Ahead of Jewish Holidays
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted special counter-terrorism operations in several areas of East Jerusalem, including Anata, Kafr Aqab, and the Shuafat and Qalandia refugee camps, just before the upcoming Jewish High Holidays. The operations, which involved arresting terror suspects and seizing weapons, were documented by i24NEWS Jerusalem and Territories correspondent Shlomi Heller, who accompanied the forces.
The raids targeted areas described as having descended into chaos and lawlessness over recent decades, with neither Israeli nor Palestinian Authority control being sufficient. This vacuum has allowed criminal and terror elements to flourish. The operations are part of a broader security buildup in the West Bank and Jerusalem, aimed at ensuring relative quiet during the holidays, following a recent spate of attacks and attempted attacks.
The context for these heightened security measures includes the recent abduction of two Israeli reservists by Palestinian Authority security forces in Ramallah, an incident for which no suspects have yet been arrested by the IDF's Judea and Samaria Division. Despite Defense Minister Israel Katz's directive to prepare for strikes against PA officials should the situation escalate, forces on the ground are reportedly maintaining close cooperation with the PA to de-escalate tensions.
