As the Jewish High Holy Days approach, music producer Mendy Portnoy, known for his work with TYH Nation, has released a new electronic single titled 'Avinu Malkeinu' (Our Father, Our King). This release marks a significant shift from his previous projects, as it features an original melody rather than an arrangement of an ancient tune. The track blends Jewish spiritual depth with contemporary electronic music.
Portnoy explained that the inspiration for the song came from the tension surrounding the High Holy Days. Instead of focusing on fear, he aimed to emphasize the personal and warm connection between individuals and their Creator. He stated, "I really wanted to take all the fear that exists in this period, the anxiety of Judgment Day is something I grew up with. I thought about focusing on the idea that, yes, we have a judgment on Judgment Day, but hey, the judge is our Father! And we can and should be joyful."
A key musical decision in the single is the omission of lyrics from the chorus. Portnoy elaborated, "This is also why I didn't include words in the chorus. He is our Father, we don't need to be in fear or under pressure. It doesn't matter if Jews are abroad or at home, 'Avinu Malkeinu' means He is our Father just as He is our King." This choice aims to give the song a universal appeal, speaking to everyone through pure musical language.
The single is part of Portnoy's personal electronic series, 'mendel just,' which previously featured electronic arrangements of ancient Jewish melodies, such as 'Ein Od Milvado.' With 'Avinu Malkeinu,' Portnoy transitions to original composition, reflecting artistic growth and a desire to offer something entirely new while maintaining the series' unique musical identity. The optimistic, yet not overtly danceable, track is described as an anthem intended to unite people without words.
