Agudat Yisrael Splits as Faction Forms New Independent Party

A dramatic political development has occurred within the Haredi political landscape as MKs Meir Porush and Gafni Stark announced their intention to run as an independent new party, breaking away from Agudat Yisrael. This move aims to secure greater political and financial independence for the faction.

By establishing their own party, Porush and Stark intend to increase their leverage in negotiations with other political leaders, including Prime Minister Netanyahu, ensuring they are directly consulted in future coalition talks. The decision was reportedly made in coordination with other political figures and involved completing the necessary procedural steps for independent party status.

This new party will also grant them direct control over monthly party funding allocations for their Knesset members, totaling hundreds of thousands of shekels, which were previously managed centrally. This financial independence is seen as a key component of their strategy.

The move has triggered a sharp reaction from representatives of the Gur Hasidic dynasty, who have refused to sign an agreement for a joint run with the new party. Consequently, negotiations have stalled, with representatives leaving the room, leading to a deadlock.
