Sergi Roberto, one of the first players Cesc Fabregas brought to Como, is now out of contract after helping the Italian club reach the Champions League for the first time. The Spaniard left Barcelona, where he spent his entire career, and has made 37 appearances for Como over the past two seasons. This season he played 24 matches, scored once and did not register an assist, but remained an important part of Fabregas’ team.
Italian journalist Nicolo Schira reported on Wednesday that Roberto and Como are holding talks over a contract extension, but no agreement has been reached. With the 34-year-old now a free agent, some voices in the discussion say he may move on to the next stage of his career, while others are even mentioning retirement.
Roberto, who is married to Israeli model Coral Simanovich, is currently in Israel and staying fit despite the security situation. This morning, Eran Zahavi posted a story showing him playing padel with Roberto and Eliran Atar, while Roberto has also shared social media posts of training, running and strength work on Tel Aviv’s boardwalk.
Because of his relationship with Simanovich, the former Barcelona player has close ties to Israel and has spent part of the current summer break there. He also previously posted videos congratulating hostages who returned from Hamas captivity, without appearing to fear criticism. Even so, a move to one of the big clubs in the Israeli Premier League would be difficult, since reports say his salary is around 2.2 million euros per season, far above even the league’s top earners.
