Parents' Security Concerns at Special Needs Kindergarten Met with Accusations of Racism

Parents of children with special needs at a kindergarten in Gedera have raised serious security concerns, citing inadequate supervision and the entry of Arab maintenance and cleaning staff without proper escort. They fear for the safety of their children, who require constant, protected supervision, and believe any breach in entry protocols poses a significant risk.

One mother's attempt to obtain answers from the head of the municipality's education department resulted in a heated exchange. An audio recording reveals the official dismissing the security concerns and accusing the mother of racism. He further stated that "even among kosher Jews, there are thieves and rapists, and some of them wear kippahs," to justify the employment of Arab workers.

The parents argue that the official's response prioritizes political correctness over addressing their legitimate security questions regarding guard presence and escort procedures for external workers. They maintain the debate over racism is irrelevant to the professional issues that remain unresolved.

The Gedera Local Council responded by stating that the security of children, especially those with special needs, is a top priority. They explained that the kindergarten's security allocation was reduced by the Ministry of Education this year, a change affecting all kindergartens in the town. Despite this, the council has arranged for a security guard to be present for two hours in the morning and two hours during pick-up times. The council also emphasized that cleaning staff are legally employed and undergo required checks, and that an employee's ethnicity or religion should not be a basis for preventing their employment. They condemned any demand to exclude Arab workers as discriminatory and contrary to equality principles. The council clarified that the education official did not call the mothers racist, but rather stated that the demand to exclude Arab workers based on their origin is racist. The council pledged to continue dialogue with parents, explain security arrangements, and operate with transparency and sensitivity for the children's well-being.
