Ultra-Orthodox Party Nominates Woman for Knesset for First Time
For the first time in Israel's history, an ultra-Orthodox political party has put forward a woman as a candidate for the Knesset, the Israeli parliament. The move by the new Haredi public party, led by Moti Leitner, came just one day before the deadline for submitting party lists to the Central Elections Committee.
The party announced the addition of Dr. Nechumi Jaffe, a prominent researcher in political psychology, senior lecturer, and research fellow at Tel Aviv University. She has also previously collaborated with Harvard University on projects concerning the ultra-Orthodox community.
In an official statement, the party highlighted Dr. Jaffe's extensive experience in social and public affairs. In 2020, she served as a special advisor on Haredi affairs to the National Security Council, focusing on poverty alleviation. Following the events of October 7, 2023, she coordinated an emergency response center to assist families from areas bordering the Gaza Strip.
