Holiday Stuffed Onion Recipe Features Time-Saving Microwave Trick
A festive stuffed onion recipe is presented as a centerpiece dish for Rosh Hashanah, offering both meat and vegan filling options. The recipe highlights a "wow" factor with pomegranate accents, suitable for holiday meals.
A key innovation in the preparation involves a shortcut for softening the onions. Instead of traditional methods, the recipe suggests placing 4-5 onions in a tied plastic bag and microwaving them for ten minutes. After cooling, the layers can be easily separated with a knife.
The meat filling includes 300 grams of ground meat, half a cup of basmati rice, a grated small onion, baharat, turmeric, lemon salt or juice, salt, and pepper. The vegan version features one cup of basmati rice, half a cup of cranberries, half a cup of pine nuts, chopped parsley and mint, silan, baharat, turmeric, lemon salt or juice, salt, and pepper.
The sauce for both versions consists of half a cup of pomegranate molasses, two tablespoons of silan, juice from half a lemon, two cups of boiling water, salt, and pepper. The stuffed onions are cooked in this sauce for about an hour and a half on the stovetop or two and a half hours in a 160-degree Celsius oven for a more caramelized result.
The dish is served garnished with pomegranate seeds and fresh parsley, presented either in the cooking pot or on a flat serving plate.
