Festive Rosh Hashanah Salad Recipe Features Pears, Pomegranates, and Pecans
As the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, approaches, a recipe for a festive lettuce salad is being shared, designed to be a centerpiece for holiday meals. The salad combines crisp lettuce with the sweetness of pears, the crunch of candied pecans, and the burst of pomegranate seeds.
To prepare the salad, two heads of washed and torn lettuce (Salanova or Romaine varieties are suggested) form the base. This is layered with two ripe but firm pears, sliced thinly. A half cup of candied Chinese pecans adds sweetness and texture, while a handful of pomegranate seeds provides a tart contrast.
The dressing is a simple vinaigrette made from three tablespoons of olive oil, one tablespoon of Dijon mustard, two tablespoons of honey, two tablespoons of balsamic vinegar, and salt and pepper to taste. All dressing ingredients are shaken together in a small jar until emulsified.
For an optional upgrade, the pear slices can be briefly sautéed in a pan with a tablespoon of honey to lightly caramelize them before adding to the salad. The dressing is poured over the salad just before serving, and the pomegranate seeds, pears, and pecans are sprinkled on top to maintain their crispness.
