Senator John Fetterman Faces Criticism Over Senate Work and Israel Advocacy

A new report from The Wall Street Journal has brought sharp criticism to Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, highlighting his perceived lack of engagement with his legislative duties. The report, based on accounts from former staffers, suggests Fetterman has shown minimal interest in his work as a lawmaker, instead focusing heavily on his strong support for Israel and cultivating relationships with conservative influencers.

According to the report, Fetterman has become increasingly absent from public life in Pennsylvania, rarely holding events or meeting with constituents. This focus on his pro-Israel stance and outreach to conservative media figures has reportedly come at the expense of his senatorial responsibilities. The article notes that Fetterman has even threatened to leave the Democratic Party if it were to turn against Israel, stating in May, "If our party ever becomes anti-Israel, that's the moment I will leave."

Further complicating matters, an anonymous X (formerly Twitter) account, allegedly run by former Fetterman staffers, has threatened to release additional information about the senator's conduct, with a first post scheduled for September 14. This account claims to aim to show Pennsylvanians "exactly who their senator is."

In one instance detailed in the report, Fetterman reportedly agreed to write an opinion piece supporting Israel, based on points provided by the Israeli embassy. However, his staff allegedly did not inform him of this, and the idea was abandoned. The report also mentions Fetterman's frustration with attending mandatory events, such as meetings with hospital officials or funerals for fallen police officers, while seemingly neglecting Senate proceedings.

Fetterman has pushed back against the allegations, dismissing them as "lies, half-truths, innuendo, smears, and anonymity" spread by "disgruntled former staff" aiming to damage his reputation. He asserted, "No matter how many smears or hit pieces are published, I am proud to continue to serve Pennsylvania."
