DNA Tests Reveal Ethiopian Jews Eligible for Aliyah Awaiting Israeli Approval

Genetic testing conducted by the Population and Immigration Authority in Ethiopia has confirmed the existence of individuals eligible for immigration to Israel under the Law of Return who are currently awaiting approval. This finding emerged during a discussion by the Knesset Committee on Immigration, Absorption, and Diaspora Affairs, chaired by MK Gilad Kariv.

Kariv stated that contrary to previous assumptions that no more eligible individuals remained in Ethiopia, the tests prove otherwise. He urged the establishment of a dedicated immigration desk for Ethiopians no later than after the Sukkot holiday. Data from the Population Authority reveals that between 2022 and 2026, 1,252 families, comprising 3,861 individuals, submitted applications. Of these, 117 families (310 people) were approved, while 702 families (2,427 people) were denied. An additional 184 families are awaiting interviews, and 192 are currently being processed.

Michal Yosefof from the Authority reported that a delegation in Ethiopia in July examined 146 family applications (497 individuals). Tissue tests identified additional eligible candidates, leading to the approval of 21 families (73 people). Regarding the planned immigration desk, whose staffing was approved by the Finance Committee in July, Yosefof explained that its establishment is delayed due to the need to secure a physical location in central Israel. Until office space is approved, the positions cannot be filled.

MK Moshe Solomon called for a revised immigration policy for Ethiopia, advocating for investment in a permanent field inspection team and the elimination of unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles in the genetic testing process.
