Electric Scooter and Bike License Plate Fines Jump to NIS 750

Drivers in Israel are facing significantly higher fines for failing to install license plates on electric bicycles and scooters. As of September 1, 2026, the penalty for this offense has increased to 750 shekels (approximately $200 USD). This marks a substantial rise from the initial fine of 100 shekels, which was in effect from September 1, 2024, to August 31, 2025. The fine then increased to 500 shekels from September 1, 2025, to August 31, 2026.

This escalation in fines is part of a broader regulatory effort to enhance road safety and enforce traffic laws for light electric vehicles. Previously, only police officers could issue these citations. However, a recent amendment to traffic regulations now empowers municipal inspectors to enforce the license plate requirement, aiming for more effective implementation.

The Ministry of Transportation has established a system for registering these motorized light vehicles and issuing identification plates. The stated goal is to improve personal security for all road users by enabling better identification and enforcement against traffic offenders.

Enforcement is being bolstered by numerous cameras strategically placed throughout cities, particularly in areas where riders illegally use sidewalks and pedestrian walkways, endangering pedestrians. These cameras record traffic violations, and the footage is monitored by inspectors in an electronic enforcement center.
