Sentencing Delayed for Killer of Palestinian Man in Northern Israel

A sentencing hearing for the man convicted of killing Diyar al-Omari, a resident of the village of Sandala in northern Israel, was postponed on Monday. The hearing, originally scheduled for 9:30 AM, was delayed due to a medical emergency experienced by the defendant's lawyer, according to the Adalah Legal Center for Minority Rights in Israel. The Nazareth Central Court was set to deliver its verdict for Denis Mukin, who was convicted in December 2025 of "reckless homicide" in al-Omari's death. Prosecutors had previously requested a sentence of at least 26 years, while the defense sought 14 to 18 years.

Diyar al-Omari, 20, was shot and killed by Mukin on May 6, 2023, following an altercation near the settlement of Ganim, adjacent to Sandala. An indictment was filed against Mukin in June 2023 for al-Omari's killing and other offenses. The court convicted Mukin of "reckless homicide" on December 24, 2025, a downgrade from the original charge of intentional homicide, which had angered al-Omari's family. Lawyer Omar Khamaisi explained that the judges were divided on the issue of criminal intent, and the final sentence would be determined at a later date. The Adalah Center stated it would provide details on the next hearing in due course.
