Liberman Challenges Eisenkot for Opposition Leadership

Avigdor Liberman, leader of the Yisrael Beiteinu party, is launching his election campaign with a strategy focused on security issues, accountability for the October 7th failures, and establishing a state investigative commission. He aims not only to strengthen his party's position but also to present himself as a distinct candidate for Prime Minister of Israel, according to Maariv. Liberman's campaign emphasizes the need for public discourse on the leadership's mistakes and decisions made prior to the October 7th attack, asserting he had previously warned of existing threats.

Liberman's central demand is the formation of a state investigative commission, framing his campaign as a "war against memory" to keep the events of October 7th a constant part of the political agenda and bolster his security credentials. His party has repeatedly used the phrase "next prime minister," signaling his ambition to be seen as a leading contender for the top government post, rather than a junior partner in an opposition bloc.

This ambition places Liberman in direct competition with Benny Gantz, who is also vying for leadership within the opposition. While Liberman respects Gantz's personal qualities, he opposes Gantz being automatically recognized as the sole candidate for the "Change Bloc," believing it hinders the broader political alliance.
