US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday, during the G7 summit in France, that the understanding signed with Iran does not guarantee the end of hostilities. "The memorandum with Iran is not final. If I do not like the agreement, we will go back to dropping bombs," he said. Additional reports said Trump warned that the United States would resume bombing if Iran fails to meet its commitments.
According to the text of the memorandum obtained by Al Arabiya, Iran would keep the current status quo in its nuclear program during 60 days of talks toward a final deal. Tehran would have to pledge not to develop or acquire nuclear weapons, and to refrain from further uranium enrichment or expanding its nuclear facilities. The issue of enriched uranium stockpiles, the future of enrichment, and sanctions relief would remain open for negotiations between the sides.
At the same time, Trump sent an unusual message to Israel about the fighting in Lebanon. He said he had suggested allowing Syria to deal with Hezbollah. "I suggested to Israel that Syria handle Hezbollah, because frankly, I think they would do a better job," he said.
A day earlier, Trump criticized Israel's conduct in Lebanon, saying that if Israel cannot fight Hezbollah without causing a large number of casualties, Syria should intervene. He said the campaign has gone on too long and called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to act with "much greater responsibility" in the Lebanese arena.
